GSHC Surrogacy School is in session! Read our in-house guide on the ins-and-outs of the journey.
Every great story begins with a tiny spark, and in the world of surrogacy, that spark is an embryo. As a surrogate mother, you are part of an extraordinary surrogacy journey—one that starts long before the embryo is placed into your womb. Behind the scenes, an intricate and miraculous process unfolds, bringing together science, hope, and the dreams of intended parents. Understanding this surrogacy journey not only connects you to the story of the child you will help bring into the world but also deepens your appreciation for the role you play in making families whole.
Like any good story, the creation of an embryo starts with its characters—the intended parents, or sometimes donors, who contribute the essential elements: eggs and sperm. These building blocks of life come together in a highly specialized setting, orchestrated by medical experts who guide the process with precision and care.
The intended mother or an egg donor undergoes a process called egg retrieval (ER), where hormonal medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then carefully collected. Meanwhile, sperm is provided by the intended father or a donor, ensuring that both pieces of this puzzle are in place.
Inside a fertility clinic, scientists take over. A delicate technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used to inject a single sperm directly into an egg. This method maximizes the chances of fertilization, allowing nature to take its course in a controlled environment.
Over the next five to six days, the fertilized eggs grow into blastocysts, the stage at which embryos are considered strong enough for transfer. Each tiny cell is developing with incredible precision, guided by the natural blueprint of life.
Not every embryo makes it to the next chapter. To ensure the best possible outcome, many intended parents opt for Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A). This screening process helps identify embryos with the healthiest chromosomal makeup and even reveals the gender, if the parents choose to know in advance.
Once the best embryos are selected, they are preserved in liquid nitrogen, frozen in time until the moment arrives for their next great adventure.
As a surrogate mother, this is where your role becomes central to the story. Your body must be carefully prepared to receive the embryo, much like preparing the perfect home for a new arrival.
Because this is not a natural conception, your body requires external support in the form of hormonal medications. These help create the ideal uterine environment for the embryo to implant and grow.
On the day before your embryo transfer, the selected embryo is carefully thawed, awakening from its frozen state and getting ready for its new home.
The embryo is then placed into your uterus through a quick and gentle procedure using a thin catheter. Though it takes only a few moments, this is a defining chapter in the surrogacy journey—a moment where hope turns into reality.
As a surrogate mother, you are never just carrying an embryo. You are carrying someone’s dream, their future, their love in its purest form. This surrogacy journey is filled with science and careful planning, but at its heart, it is a story of human connection.
When you embark on this experience, you are not just following a medical process—you are becoming part of a narrative filled with anticipation, resilience, and immeasurable joy. By understanding how embryos are created, selected, and nurtured, you gain a deeper appreciation for the miracle unfolding within you.
Every story has a beginning, and yours is one of hope, compassion, and the magic of life itself.
