Types of Insurance Used in Surrogacy

1. Surrogate Mother’s Existing Insurance

• If the surrogate’s current insurance covers surrogacy → This plan can be used to cover medical expenses related to the surrogacy pregnancy.
• If the surrogate’s insurance does NOT cover surrogacy → The intended parents must purchase an alternative insurance plan to ensure all pregnancy-related medical costs are covered.

2. Surrogate Without Insurance

• If a surrogate does not have medical insurance, the intended parents must purchase a suitable insurance plan before the pregnancy begins.

3. Insurance Purchase During Pregnancy

• If the surrogate becomes pregnant but lacks adequate insurance, or if it is outside the open enrollment period, the intended parents may need to purchase:
• A new medical insurance policy specifically for the surrogate.
• Gap insurance to cover medical expenses until a suitable plan is active.

Who Pays for Medical Bills in Surrogacy?

All medical bills related to the surrogacy pregnancy are the responsibility of the intended parents. The surrogate should never be expected to cover any pregnancy-related costs. Providers will bill the insurance policy designated for the journey, so having the right plan in place is key to avoiding delays or unexpected charges.

That said, the surrogate also plays an important role in keeping things on track. This includes providing accurate information about her insurance (if she has it), completing a review with an insurance specialist, following the approved coverage plan, and making sure she uses only in-network providers.
